  • If you cannot find an answer, write the words/phrase you were using for your search

24jan: File Extensions

Some of you may have noticed that some file extensions won't work on your teacher's computer. To solve this problem, we use a media file converter program called Format Factory. Format Factory will convert any media file type to any other media file type. This only runs on a Windows machine - it is on our computers here at school, so it is clean to download and install.*

FWAFA recommends converting your files to the following file types (extensions) for each of the media formats:

  • video: .avi
  • audio: .mp3
  • images: .jpg

Format Factory also can rip CD's and DVD's along with a lot of other cool stuff that you might want to use it for at home!

* One word about the installation - before you click the last button that says "Finish," make sure that last screen has time to completely load. You'll probably want to UNcheck the boxes that want to make Ask.com your default search engine and add an Ask.com search box in your browser. These are harmless, but annoying!

(I'll add the days and the assignments here so it doesn't look like we haven't done anything!)

1st Semester Final:  7th grade Final

Yes, your name and class period are worth 10 points on this final. If you would rather answer some of these questions on paper, make sure to indicate which question you are answering on the paper, and make a note on the computer test that you are writing the answer. Include your name and class period on your written test. Staple it to your test when you turn it in - I'll even give you 2 extra credit points for the staple...

Friday, 06jan12: Final Review

Semester 1 Final Review

Wednesday, 14dec: Creating a path in GE

To practice creating a path, you'll draw a path from your house to the school and then from the school back to your house using a different route.

We'll also learn how to save that map (your house, path to school, school, path from school to your house) correctly. What I was showing you on Monday wasn't quite right, but I've done some reading and practicing and I think I've figured it out.... maybe one of you knows how to do this correctly? This is the .kmz file that I created:

TODAY: participation grade

Monday, 12dec: Google Earth (GE)

Pretend that you and 5 of your closest friends are going on a Christmas shopping spree. Use Google Earth to plot the path to your friends' homes and then to the mall of your choice.

Today we'll look at:

  • Marking and saving locations in GE
  • Saving your locations to a .kmz file
    • save as 7pX_name_shoppingTrip into your maddox folder
  • Creating a "path"

DUE TODAY: your .kmz file with the locations of your home and your 5 friends homes.

Friday, 02dec: Clarification (for 11/28 and 11/30)

First, I must apologize for not recording the PPT assignment that you're working on. I know some of you just aren't sure of what you're supposed to be doing, and I really haven't been clear. For that reason, I will accept whatever you have done since completing Miss Taylor's assignment.

These are the assignment variations that most of you have understood to be the assignment:

  • a really REALLY BAD ppt that demonstrates what NOT to do when you make one
  • a really REALLY BAD ppt using a topic of your choice that represents a winter tradition
  • the same winter tradition topic, but properly presented in a good ppt
  • anything else that you've done in ppt intending on completing the assignment

We will begin to look at these today!

Thursday, 17nov: Seriously, Death by PowerPoint

All I want is one slide that is really REALLY BAD! You can add more than one, but at least one bad slide. Spend some time playing around with all the things that can be done - explore! If you don't know, just ask! Don't forget to name it 7pX_badPPT_name

DUE: TODAY - minimum 1 BAD slide

Tuesday, 15nov: Avoiding Death By PowerPoint

AFTER we watch the videos below, I want you to open PowerPoint and create just 2-4 slides demonstrating the bad things that Mr. McMillin refers to in his "Death By PowerPoint" video. Save your PowerPoint as 7pX_badPPT_name. Do not change the file type - let it save as the default .pptx.

Wednesday, 12oct: Finish up steveJobs.rtf

Let's get our Steve Jobs facts all in place. Remember, there are 10 and you need to include the URLs of your facts!

When you finish with that, you may begin putting this information into some form for a presentation. I want you to choose a tool that you are comfortable with so that I can get an idea about what presentation skills that we should spend time learning. Some suggestions are:

Thursday, 29sept: New Start Pages

Today, we'll add these two web pages to your browser's start pages...

bellWork asignment: On the SweetSearch2Day site, scroll down until you see the Photo of the Day. Click on that picture to open in a new tab.

Create a new document:

  • Bell Work
  • today's date (9/29)
  • your name and 7pX
  • save: MyDocuments\2011-2012\bellWork.rtf

Once you have this information in your document, here are some line spacing tips in Word:

  • first, highlight the information to which you want to make a change
    • left click on your cursor and drag it over that material, OR
    • CTRL + A = Select All
  • on the Home Ribbon, select the line spacing tab in the paragraph section
    • make sure the add/remove space before/after paragraphs options are both say remove space
    • then adjust your line spacing accordingly
  • Making this adjustment will control how much space there is between your lines of text and when you use the "enter" key to begin a new line

DUE TODAY: print out your bell work - place it on the seat of my tall chair at the front of the room!

WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED, use the rest of your time to explore these new websites.

Tuesday, 27sept: Printing

I want to hear your thoughts about the video you watched on Friday. I'll also have you add to your 7pX_practiceSaving_name.rtf document.

We'll go over the process of printing an assignment as well as printing different types of information from the internet. Everything is not as simple as it appears to be!

DUE: TODAY - print out 7pX_disconnected_name.rtf and turn it in.

Friday, 23sept: Using 7pX_practiceSaving_name.rtf

Alas. I am not with you today in body, but I'll be thinking of you just the same! Today you'll begin watching a video called "Disconnected." This is a video about 3 college students that decide to go without their computers for a period of time. You'll watch it for a while, then Ms. Sanchez will pause the video and ask you some questions. I expect to hear some great things about your discussion from her!

After your class discussion, open:
MyDocuments\2011-2012\practice\7pX_practiceSaving_name.rtf.
Change the file's name to 7pX_disconnected_name and save it again - do not change the file type or where it is in your folders.

First, write/type your name, grade and class period in the document (example: sherill 7p6). Then write/type your thoughts about the following questions into that document:

  • What are some things that you use your computer for?
  • What are some ways that you see your parents or other people around you using their computers?
  • What do you think that you'd miss out on if you couldn't use your computer for a few weeks?
  • How do you think your friends, family and teachers would respond if you decided to try this experiment as well?

You may do this however you wish - type out the question or not, use complete sentences or use a list. This is your choice!

When you are finished, just leave it in your folder and on Monday, I will go over the printing process with you! (Have a great weekend!)

Wednesday, 21sept: Practice

MyDocuments\2011-2012\practice\7pX_practiceSaving_name.rtf

Monday, 19sept: Details, details, details....

There are just so many "little" things about using the computers! I appreciate the way you've been staying with me during this "ranodm" time - really, we are getting a lot of work done though!

I know that some of you are keeping an eye out for a "special" something..... keep watching!

Thursday, 15sept: more Basics....

Depending upon how far your class got on Tuesday, we'll pick up right there today!

PARTICIPATION grade for today

Tuesday, 13sept: The Basics....

(You can also download these instructions by clicking on this link: Basic Setup Instructions.)

Obviously, you've successfully signed into your user account and have found your way to our class page! I'd like you to open another tab in your browser and make it go to google.com. At this point, we'll learn how to make these pages automatically open when you open your browser as Start Pages:

  • on the browser menu: Tools > Options > General Tab > Use Current Pages
  • to see a visual tutorial on this process, click this link: Setting Up Firefox

We'll add other start pages as time passes, so don't forget how to do this, OR don't forget where to find these instructions!

Next, I want you create a shortcut icon on your Desktop both for My Computer and My Documents:

  • Start > All Programs > RIGHT click on My Documents > "Show on Desktop"
  • Start > All Programs > RIGHT click on My Computer > "Show on Desktop'
  • You can add a shortcut to any program or document on your desktop using this method.

DO NOT personalize your desktop with backgrounds, fonts, change any colors or pointers at this point. Doing so anyway could result in suspension of your computer privileges for a period of time. We will discuss this on Thursday when we go over the Computer User Agreement Form.

Your class web page:

  • All assignments and instructions will be here
    • If you don't pay attention when I go over these instructions, you will be asked to re-read them for yourself
      • There is always time for clarifying questions though! Ask!
    • You may need to refer to these assignments if you are making up an assignment or turning it in late.
  • Every assignment date, due date and type of grade will be posted with your assignment here.
  • If there is ever a question about an instruction or a date, whatever you read on this page is always the final word.

Setting up your Windows Explorer:

  • identify the Menu bar and Tool bar
    • Tool bar
      • "Views" icon - set to "list"
      • "Folders" icon - turn that on (click it)
    • Menu
      • Tools > Folder Options > view tab > "apply to all folders"
        • You will need to reset this from time to time - don't forget how!
      • same tab, UNcheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
        • Again, you'll need to reset this from time to time as well.
  • Address bar
    • shows the file path to a document
    • I will use the file path to describe how I want you to name a document and to where I want you to save it

In general, these are some of my assignment requirements:

  • All text documents must be saved as an .rtf file - Rich Text File (or Format)
  • All outside sources must be cited (articles, images, etc)
  • Each assignment must include your name, grade and class period in this format:
    • If I'm in the 7th grade and 4th period and my name is Sally Jones,
    • Sallie Jones 7p4

Seems like a lot! Once we get these procedures down, they seem like nothing! More to come...

DUE TODAY: Participation grade

Monday, 30aug: The History of Computers

We will watch this DVD together and I'll stop it along the way to highlight some of the more important steps in the evolution of the computer as we know it today. You do not need to take notes on this. I will post my own notes so that you'll have them as a reference should you need them!

Tuesday, 23aug: Getting to Know You!

I will hand out a form for you to give your parents to fill out. You must return this to me on Thursday for a grade! Help them remember! Here is a copy of that form:

Parent Response Form

There is also a form for you to fill out, but I will give that to you on Thursday. If you'd like a head start on it, click this link and save the file:
