Before Tuesday (2/14), I want you to set up a Google Docs account and a Diigo bookmarking account. I will be emailing your parents with the details of this process so they can help you if they wish. Both of these online tools will greatly increase the amount of work that we can do in class, as well as at home.
Discussion questions:
Break up into partners and answer these questions. Save this as seQuestions_name_name.rtf into your maddox folder. You must include your sources. Let me know who has this document in their account.
DUE: TODAY - print this out and put it on my chair.
We will review your answers in class on Thursday, 2/16.
Spend a few minutes looking at the Tween Tribune and Sweet Search 2Day and see what's been going on "out there." We'll then talk about what you've read by stating the obvious, and then seeing where that takes us. Each of you will be expected to contribute to the class discussion at least once today for your grade.
Your Miss Saunders needs you to get signed up for Jump Rope for Heart 2012. Please follow these instructions:
TODAY: Continue working on your Scavenger Hunt. Remember - this is not about the correct answers, but about the search process! When you finish, just be sure its saved in your folder.
IF YOU FINISH the Scavenger Hunt, write at least 5 new random questions that can be used for another Scavenger Hunt:
DUE: Friday in class, completed Scavenger Hunt AND 5 random questions. Please let me know if you are unable to complete the random questions assignment and why.
This assignment is not about finding the correct answers. It is not about finishing it during this class period. It IS about finding information.
We will spend at least two class periods working on this, so I'm not listing a due date yet.
Some of you may have noticed that some file extensions won't work on your teacher's computer. To solve this problem, we use a media file converter program called Format Factory. Format Factory will convert any media file type to any other media file type. This only runs on a Windows machine - it is on our computers here at school, so it is clean to download and install.*
FWAFA recommends converting your files to the following file types (extensions) for each of the media formats:
Format Factory also can rip CD's and DVD's along with a lot of other cool stuff that you might want to use it for at home!
* One word about the installation - before you click the last button that says "Finish," make sure that last screen has time to completely load. You'll probably want to UNcheck the boxes that want to make Ask.com your default search engine and add an Ask.com search box in your browser. These are harmless, but annoying!
(I'll add the days and the assignments here so it doesn't look like we haven't done anything!)
If you haven't presented your group's file extensions to the class yet, we'll do that today.
Today, we'll look at how file extensions are used on our own computers, and see how that applies to work we will do for the rest of the semester.
ASSIGNMENT:
DUE: Thursday in class - Your grade will be based upon the answer to the question I've asked your to answer, your completed lists and the way your document is formatted.
FileInfo.com - Use this web site as your resource
Download the following document. Follow the instructions about saving it. Saving with the correct name and to the correct location is worth 20 points.
DUE: in class Thursday - no exceptions
Some of you will be doing the Assignment version of this lesson as described above.... For the rest, I will divide you into groups of 4, each representing a different group of file types. In your groups:
DUE in the your class period.
Yes, your name and class period are worth 10 points on this final. If you would rather answer some of these questions on paper, make sure to indicate which question you are answering on the paper, and make a note on the computer test that you are writing the answer. Include your name and class period on your written test. Staple it to your test when you turn it in - I'll even give you 2 extra credit points for the staple...
Spend at least 30 minutes today with the typing lessons. Use the rest of your time to continue with a typing game on the TypingWeb web site or working on some school work for another class.
username: 8pX_firstnameLastinitial (8p4_sherillm)
password: 8pX
You are responsible for knowing your own password. We have been using this site for 6 weeks now and there is no excuse for not being able to login due to not knowing your password.
I'll see you on Wednesday!
DUE: TODAY - minimum 30 minutes of typing.
You should have already started the assignment that was given on Tuesday. If you need to review that assignment, scroll down and re-read it. When you are finished, just leave it in your maddox folder - I will gather them later.
When you finish your Chats and Graphs assignment, you will need to spend the rest of the period working on typing lessons in TypingWeb.com.
DUE: TODAY - 8pX_excelCharts_name.rtf - assignment grade AND login minutes for today on TypingWeb.com. No time requirement, but you must have some time recorded on today.
Ms. Sanchez will be taking you through the process of creating and using charts and graphs in Excel. She will demonstrate that process while you follow along and create your own version of what she's doing. I've uploaded all of the notes she's using for this assignment for you to refer to if needed: Creating Charts and Graphs in Excel Demonstration
For today, open a new Excel workbook and call it:
C:\\MyDocuments\maddox\excel\8pX_excelDemo_name.xlsx
When you're done with the demonstration, you'll need to open another new Excel workbook:
C:\\MyDocuments\maddox\8pX_excelCharts_name.xlsx:
DUE: TODAY - 8pX_excelDemo_name.xlsx - participation grade
DUE: Thursday - 8pX_excelCharts_name.xlsx - assignment grade

Here are some other online typing lessons and games I want you to explore:
We'll finish this assignment on Monday, 12/5
We've had at least 3 full class periods set aside for typing practice and some of you have logged as few as 6 minutes total for those 3 days. Use today's time to add minutes to your typing grade that will be turned in today. I will expect at least 15 minutes of working on the lessons - any minutes beyond those 15 minutes will count as extra credit for your typing grade.
TODAY: minimum of 15 minutes of lesson typing - more than 15 minutes = extra credit
Tomorrow is supposed to be a big day! Use your time to do some research:
DUE: TODAY - print this out, turn it in

We'll review what you remember from the last time we took notes - please make sure that your notes contain the information you'll need to complete the final assignment for this video! If you don't remember, perhaps you should check the original assignment from Tuesday, aug30...
Set these 3 pages as your start pages in Foxfire:

We are going to watch the History of Computers video again this year, but this time, you're going to take notes! There are several reasons for which we are doing this:
We will talk about what kinds of information that you'll need to write down before we start. You'll be expected to make notes as the video plays. Periodically, I'll stop the video and we'll talk about what notes you took and different ways that some of you recorded those notes. I will post my own notes here when we've finished the video.
Save your notes as historyNotes.rtf into a new folder named
