You are responsible for meeting the deadlines in these assignments. I will go over each of these with the staffers responsible for a specific assignment.
RESOURCES:
Here are the Yearbook Staff job descriptions again. Please read at least the editor's job description for both the Traditional and Non-Traditional staff descriptions before filling out your form!
TODAY
Monday, I will announce your editor in class. We will also print and/or stuff envelopes to send out.
I thought Mr. DePal was very encouraging yesterday. We are all so ready to get at the business of creating our book and as a staff, we will be successful!
Vocabulary Annotation DUE TODAY, Wednesday, 1/26
PLEASE read the instructions CAREFULLY!
This is for a TEST grade.
This will be your final version of the advertising letter that you will send for your initial contact with the businesses on your ad assignment list. This is the letter that you will actually send.
It should go without saying that you need to carefully consider what this letter represents:
I will be more than happy to proof-read your letter and/or answer any questions (composition or content).
MONDAY we will begin to print your letters. Save it as finalLetter_name.rtf in assignments\finalLetter_name_30janDUE.
Design Principles Project Rubric
PROGRESS CHECK participation grade today.
The above document has a list of 17 resources that talk about the principles of design. In class, each of you will choose one link and use that information to write a create a visual presentation of the principles of design that your resource talks about. There are many different principles - not all of these resources include the same principles as other resources!
The list of resources is also in MyDocuments\assignments\designPrinciples\Principles of Design assignment.rtf. Open that document and add your resource link and a brief annotation. At the end, add your name in parenthesis. (Sherill)
DUE: Thursday, 1/16 - be ready to present!
RUBRIC...by the end of lunch
Save this document in MyDocuments\assignments\VOCAB\ and then into your folder. I will also give you a dummy sheet on which I want you to identify some of your vocab words. If you need to draw examples, this is good. Write any questions that you may have on the dummy sheet as well.
DUE: Tuesday, in class
In small groups, critique the newly created letterhead layouts by writing on them. Try to use words to describe what you see and would like to see.
Spend the rest of the period looking at magazines. When you see a page/spread that you like, stop and try to define exactly what it is about that page/spread that attracts you. Do the same foe pages/spreads that you don't like. This is often easier when working in pairs.
We'll talk about the letterhead ideas. I want you to find words that describe what you like, dislike and would like to change.
Take a few more Letterhead pages and cut them up. Create a new layout design of those same elements on a blank page. Use Word to experiment with fonts/sizes if you wish.
DUE: Thursday in class
Take an empty sheet of FWAFA's business letterhead stationary. Mark on it what you like, what you don't like, things you think should be changed.
DUE: Wednesday in class
We'll cover the formatting of a business letter and talk about the content of your letters.
ASSIGNMENT: Create a template letter as described. In the body, list all of the pertinent details that you think needs to be included in your letter. Save as name_businessTemplate.rtf in the same adLetter folder where you saved your name_adLetter.rtf
DUE: tomorrow, Tuesday in class - print this out and turn it in.
Print this out when you are finished!
We'll begin by taking this little pre-test to see what you know, what you think you know and what you don't know: Self Pre-Test. Each correct answer will give you more information about what the question is asking for - might be good to remember this as a resource for later.
We'll first look at the setting that effect the light that comes into your camera - aperture, shutter speed and ISO. You may want to take notes on this.... Everything I'll be talking about is also in this video:
Where are we now? Where are we going? How will we get there? Tune in today to find the answers to these burning questions and MORE....
ASSIGNMENT: DUE tomorrow: Bring you camera to class. If you don't have one, please let me know that ASAP so other arrangements can be made. (yes, this is for a grade)
For each photo, identify the elements that we learned about.
DUE: Tuesday, 13december. Save this with your name as the title and put it in the assignment folder
We'll begin this week with a look at Yearbook Photography and identify some elements that sets it apart from other types of photography.
PowerPoint by Balfour-Taylor, used in their Yearbook BootCamp 2009.
I want each of you to write 2 articles:
in class, Friday, 9dec
We're going to talk about the businesses that advertise in the publications that you brought to class today. We're also going to create a plan of attacking our super-massive potential ad list.
DUE: TODAY, local publication. ALSO, today will be a participation grade for our discussion.
For TOMORROW, each person needs to bring any local publication to class that has advertising in it:
For TODAY, more lists.... I will assign 4 lists of businesses that still need contact information. For everyone else, there are new spreadsheets in the advertising folder for listing specific businesses:
Google businesses of those types within the following zip codes first:
Each of you will keep a spreadsheet, but it would be best to still work in pairs so that you both don't add the same businesses. Duplicate businesses will deduct points from your grade.
DUE: TODAY - at least 10 business with contact information - individually
DUE: TOMORROW - 1 publication with advertising in it
As a group, we'll create a list of business types so we can being writing letters to our prospective advertisers.
Still working with your partner, create a survey that we can use to learn more about our FWAFA population. Save this file as: survey_name_name.rtf in the advertising folder. You may want to look in the CURRICULUM\ad sales\ folder at:
We will use your questions to create an online form in GoogleDocs that can be filled out, submitted online with the results being put into a spreadsheet for easy viewing.
DUE: Thursday, 11/03 - Print out survey questions
I want you to work in pairs and brainstorm as many businesses as you can think of that could be a possible contact for the 11-12 Yearbook.
Excel Advertising List
SAVE this list into the 1112_advertising folder.
Make your brainstorm list in column A with each business on a new row. Once you are out of ideas, go back and begin to find the contact information for each business.
Today, I will give a participation grade today based on what you've accomplished so far with the information that you've had and my observations of what you've been doing in class with your time.
HOWDY WEEK Assignments:
Assigned students will be responsible for covering their day by providing pictures and copy notes. ANYONE is free to take pictures and make notes - just be sure to let the assigned students for that day know that you have materials for their day!
DUE: Today - assessment/participation grade
This list can, and probably will change as things get finished:
It is your responsibility to keep me advised on what you need in order to accomplish your assignment - pictures, lists, naming students, etc.
Logging into the yearbook software:
We need to make an overall assessment of what we have going so far with the book. The following tasks need to be done today/tomorrow:
If you are not assigned a specific task on the above list, I will expect you to be familiarizing yourself with the StudioWorks software - look through the Help files in Overview > Notes (right column).
If you have previous experience with working in Publisher or similar desktop publishing software and/or have experience with creating layouts, please let me know! I also need help creating the student ShoutOut pages!
I thank you for your attention and effort as we jump into finishing the yearbook with a challenging learning curve, but I know that you'll do whatever it takes to get it finished in a timely manner!
